Till The End

AN: The words that I used are in bold.

“It was supposed to be my last day within this world. You remember, right? That was the day where I couldn’t stand my life anymore.” I gave the faintest of laughs, my mind drifting back to that moment where my transparent hand nearly took a hold of the skeletal fingers of the reaper. “I was impavid towards death itself. But you… You saved me, dear watcher.”

I can just barely make out something, a faint whisper in the back of my mind, and I know that it’s you — The Watcher. And I know that you’re watching over me, making sure that I don’t mess everything up like I have a tendancy to do.

“How could you forget? It was the singlemost important day of my life.” I answered, sitting up from my spot on the grass and closing my eyes. “Here, let’s see if I can remind you.” I said, my voice soft as I let the memory play over in my head.

The room grew cold, as if the world knew exactly what I was about to do. My fingers graced the handle of the knife, tears trailing down my cheeks as I slowly pulled it out of the wooden block. Not much longer, my body laid on the ground, the bloodied knife next to it, and all I could do was stare, unable to believe that I’d actually done it.

Suddenly, black smoke filled the room, and moments later, a cloaked figure stood in front of my transparent one, extending a skeletal hand towards me. And, just as I was about to take it, impavid towards what I’d previously been terrified of… He vanished, not even a cloud of smoke left behind. Immediately after, I felt my soul being yanked back towards my body, and when I opened my eyes… I was alive, and I was healed. But the bloody knife stayed right next to me.

“Do you remember now?” I asked, looking up into the sky, faintly able to make out a yes resounding within the back of my mind. A smile beamed across my face. “Good.”

For a moment, things were silent, and not that awkward silence that most people hated. It was a comfortable silence, one that made me feel reassured that everything would be okay, that the watcher was taking care of me.

“Hey, Watcher? Can I get a puppy?” I asked curiously. It was something I’d always wanted, being an animal lover myself. But I was never fully sure how far the watcher’s powers extended.

Moments later, a rather large dog came running over to me, tongue flapping wildly as it did so. Remembering what little advice my father gave to me when I was little, I bent over to let it sniff my hand first. Once it had finished sniffing my hand, I realized that we were suddenly best friends, and a smile and laugh burst from me when it jumped up and tackled me to the ground, licking my face.

“Thank you, Watcher!” I cried to the heavens, playing with the puppy for a while before letting my hands fall to my lap, slowly calming down as the dog laid it’s head in my lap.

Suddenly, a patch of grass within the middle of the park turned to rainbowed squares, then returned back to the normal dark green grass that I’d come to love. Immediately, I jumped to my feet, startled. For a moment, I thought that I was just seeing things, but then it happened again to a part of the bench.

“Watcher? Watcher, what’s going on?” I called, immediately getting to my feet, frantically watching the world around me start to crumble.

Your voice was faint — so faint that I couldn’t even make out any of the words. But your tone was frantic, and I knew that something very, very bad was happening.

“Watcher, I can’t hear you!” I called, watching as my new dog pressed against my legs with a whine, watching as the world rapidly turned to rainbowed squares. “Oh no, it’s getting worse!”

I turned, planning on running, only to find that the world is changing no matter what direction I turn in. I was helpless… And once more, I was no longer impavid.

I looked up into the sky, just barely able to make out your face before my entire world disappeared with me included, leaving me to just tiny rainbow squares.
